Navy Loses 4-3 in OT in ECHA Semi-finals

WEST CHESTER, PA (Saturday, February 19, 2011). In a close battle between Navy and Villanova University, the Midshipmen fell short of finding their way to the ECHA championship game, losing by a score of 4-3.

After a scoreless first period, the Mids came out flying in the second period and it looked as though they had the game under control.  At 6:03, Tom Reed was able to find the back of the net after Tom Krsyil skated down the right side of the ice and took a hard backhand shot, resulting in a big rebound that Reed was able to slam home. Four minutes later, on a Navy powerplay, Krysil put the puck past the Villanova goalie’s far side pad on a shot from the point after a crisp pass from Reed. And 28 seconds later, Krysil and Reed did it again, with the two going in on a 2-on-1. Krysil skated down the right side, and made a quick past to Reed, who got the goalie to go down before and roofing it over his blocker on a nice move.

However, with Navy seemingly under control of the game, Villanova was able to capitalize on power play late in the second period after Navy was whistled for bench minor.  The two-goal lead would hold up until 15:14 of the 3rd  period when Villanova scored another powerplay goal.  Then, at the 1 minute mark, Villanova pulled their goalie for the extra man and scored again to tie the game at 3 in the final seconds. Despite Navy goaltender Jameson Marshall’s outstanding performance in net, the Midshipmen lost in the first over-time period and fell to 20-11-1 on the season.

In the final weekend of their season, the Mids look to win the Crab Pot Tournament next weekend, facing off against Lehigh University at 7:30 PM on Saturday, February 26 at McMullen Ice Arena.  Penn State University Berks and Towson University will face-off at 3 PM on Saturday in the other Crab Pot's other first round matchup.
