Men's Hockey Falls At Delaware

NEWARK, DEL (Saturday, January 23, 2010) -- Delaware broke open a close game with four second period goals, including two within 15 seconds and another pair in the period's final 47 seconds,

and defeated Navy's men's ice hockey team 7-1 in an Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) contest Saturday night at the Fred Rust Arena.

With the loss, the Midshipmen men fell to 9-18-2 overall and 1-14-1 in the ESCHL.  Delaware, meanwhile, is now 17-8-1 overall and 10-4-1 in the league.
The Blue Hens jumped out to a 1-0 first period lead on the strength of a Andre Menard goal at 11:30.  Navy knotted the contest at 8:21 in the second stanza when junior Sam Carlson knocked a rebound past Delaware goaltender S.J. Broadt, following an initial shot off the stick of senior Calen Mims.  Sophomore Mitch Pulver picked up the other assist on Carlson's goal, his team leading 13th of the season.
Just when it seemed the Mids were starting to dominate play, the Blue Hens struck for two goals within a 15-second span: Kevin Miller at 11:08 and Andrew Bailey at 11:23.  Ahead 3-1, Delaware essentially put the game out of reach with a pair of tallies in the final minute of the middle period: Miller again at 19:13 and Menard again at 19:42.
The Blue Hens scored two unanswered third period goals to close out the scoring.
Sophomore Navy netminder Jameson Marshall recorded 27 saves, while his counterpart Broadt was credited with 18 stops.
The Midshipmen men play host next weekend to Rhode Island for a pair of ESCHL games Friday and Saturday nights, January 29 and 30.  Both contests start at 7:30 p.m.
