ANNAPOLIS, MD (Saturday, January 16, 2010) -- West Chester scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart midway through the third period to break open a close game and defeat Navy's ice hockey team, 5-2, in an Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) contest Saturday night at the McMullen Hockey Arena.
With the loss, the Midshipmen dropped to 8-16-2 overall and 1-12-1 in the ESCHL. The Golden Rams improved to 13-11-1 overall and 7-6-1 in the league.
West Chester scored the only goal in the first period, a power play tally at 9:45. The Golden Rams increased their lead to 2-0 early in the middle stanza with an even strength goal at the 4:38 mark.
Navy got on the scoreboard a short time later when senior co-captain Chandler Brewer drilled a shot from the left point that eluded Golden Ram goaltender Matt Murnane at 7:43. West Chester regained its two-goal advantage before the period ended when Bob McInerney fired a one-timer from just inside the blue line past Navy netminder Eric Anderson while the visitors were enjoying a 5-on-3 extra man advantage.
The Golden Rams put the game out of reach in the third period with their third power play tally of the night at 10:02, followed by an even strength goal at 11:31. The Midshipmen completed the scoring when senior co-captain Patrick Heitman fired a shot from the left point that was tipped in by freshman Doug Dietrich at 13:13.
Anderson stopped 29 of the 34 West Chester shots he faced, while his counterpart Murnane was credited with 33 saves. The Mids outshot the Golden Rams, 35-34. Navy was whistled for 26 minutes in penalties, compared to 30 for West Chester. The Mids were 1-for-9 in extra man situations, while the Golden Rams were 3-for-9.
Navy will be on the road for a pair of games next weekend, visiting Delaware to take on the Blue Hens Friday at 9 p.m. and again Saturday at 5 p.m.
