Navy Club Hockey Beats West Chester

WEST CHESTER, PA (Friday, January 15, 2010) -- Navy's ice hockey team scored a pair of back-to-back third period goals, including one while shorthanded, to defeat West Chester 3-2 in an Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL) clash Friday night at the Ice Line Arena.

With the hard-earned victory, the Midshipmen improved to 8-15-2 overall and 1-11-1 in the ESCHL.  The Golden Rams, meanwhile, dropped to 12-11-1 overall and 6-6-1 in the league.
Navy got off to a good start Friday night when senior co-captain Patrick Heitman scored off a feed from sophomore Mitch Pulver during the game's opening four minutes.  It was Heitman's third goal of the season.  But West Chester evened the score at 1-1 before the first period came to a close.
Following a scoreless second stanza, West Chester scored early in the third period to take a 2-1 lead.
But the Midshipmen came roaring back with their back-to-back goals, the first from senior Calen Mims while the teams were at even strength, and the second off the stick of sophomore Tom Fick while Navy was playing shorthanded, to take a 3-2 lead.  It was Mims' third goal of the season and Fick's ninth.
Although West Chester had several chances to tie the contest, including a two-minute power play with just over three minutes remaining in the third period, the Mids fought hard and held off the Golden Rams to earn their first ESCHL victory of this season!
Sophomore goaltender Jameson Marshall recorded 35 saves to anchor Navy's stingy defense, as the Golden Rams outshot the Mids, 37-27.  Navy triumphed despite having to kill off 11 minor penalties.
The same two teams will meet tomorrow (Saturday, January 16) night at 7:30 p.m. at the McMullen Hockey Arena in the Brigade Sports Complex in Annapolis.
