Navy Sinks Lehigh, 6-12009-12-06
ANNAPOLIS, MD (December 5, 2009) -- Sophomore Mitch Pulver and Kevin Frederick each scored a pair of goals, and senior co-assistant captain Keegan Kinkade contributed a pair of assists, to lead Navy's ice hockey team to a 6-1 victory over Lehigh Saturday night at the McMullen Hockey Arena in the Brigade Sports Complex.
With the decisive win, the Midshipmen improved to 5-13-2 overall this season.
Navy plays its final game before the holiday break next Friday night against Temple at the Flyers Skate Zone in Philadelphia. Most of the team will remain in Philadelphia overnight to attend the Army-Navy football game on Saturday.
The Mids got off to a fast start Saturday night against Lehigh's Ice Hawks, getting a shorthanded goal from junior Sam Carlson just 3:09 into the opening period. It was Carlson's team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Navy extended its lead to 2-0 early in the second stanza when freshman Patrick Maguire fired a shot from the right point that eluded Lehigh goaltender Chis Langstaff at 6:53. It was Maguire's first tally of his USNA career. The Mids increased their advantage to 3-0 just before the middle period ended, at 18:54, when Frederick rifled a wrist shot from the right face-off cirlce past Langstaff while Navy was on a power play.
Navy put the contest out of reach with a quick tally just 1:44 into the third period, as Pulver cruised in from the blue line, found the puck on its edge, and fired a slap shot into the net to put the blue-and-gold up, 4-0. The Midshipmen stretched the lead to 5-0 when freshman Matt Lutch stole the puck off a Lehigh defender's stick deep in the Ice Hawks' defensive zone and quickly fed it to Frederick, who one-timed it past Langstaff at the 10:27 mark.
Lehigh finally got on the scoreboard at 12:30 with a goal from Ben Sergent, and Navy closed out the scoring less than a minute later when a Pulver wrist shot found the upper right corner of the net at 13:10.
Sophomore Navy netminder Jameson Marshall stopped all 21 Lehigh he shots he faced during the game's first 49:44. With the Mids up 4-0 midway through the final period, head coach Mike Fox gave freshman goaltender Christian Sandroni his first action of the season; Sandroni made one save in his 10:16 between the pipes.
Langstaff finished with 33 saves for the Ice Hawks.
"Tonight our senior leadership really stepped up and set the tone," coach Fox said following the win. "Their effort and their enthusiasm was contagious and it spread throughout the entire team. We played 60 minutes of good, solid hockey and as a result, we dominated on the ice and on the scoreboard. I was very proud of our effort tonight."
