Navy Tops Maryland, 8-3


ANNAPOLIS, MD (Sunday, November 15, 2009) -- Doug Dietrich and Kevin Frederick each scored a pairt of goals, and freshman goaltender Christian Sandroni made 24 saves,

to lead the Navy ice hockey team's "taxi squad" past the University of Maryland's "C" team, 8-3, Sunday afternoon at the McMullen Hockey Arena.
Stevie Csutoros, Justin Jackson, Michael Orzetti, and Jim Tumolo also scored for the Midshipmen.
Ryan Denis led the Terrapins with a pair of goals.
Navy jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and led 3-1 after the opening period.  Navy extended its lead to 7-3 after the second stanza, then scored the game's only goal in the third period.
In addition to his two tallies, Dietrich recorded four assists.  Frederick also had a pair of assists to go along with his two goals, as the Dietrich-Frederick-Tumolo forward line had a hand in seven of the Mids' eight goals.
After being called on to make just five saves in the first period, Sandroni accumulated 19 stops over the game's final 40 minutes to finish with 24 saves out of 27 Maryland shots.
Navy is back in action again next Friday and Saturday when the Mids visit Penn State for a pair of Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League games at 9 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
