Navy Hockey Kicks Off New Season

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Sept. 10, 2009) -- Navy ice hockey fans will have their first opportunity to get a peek at the 2009-10 version of the squad this Sunday (Sept. 13) at 1 p.m. when the Midshipmen host their annual blue-gold intrasquad scrimmage in the McMullen Hockey Arena at the Hooper Brigade Sports Complex on Greenbury Point Road.  Admission to the contest is free.

When they take the ice Sunday, the Mids will be led by newly selected senior team captains Patrick Heitman and Chandler Brewer, along with senior assistant captains Keegan Kinkade and Andrew Ochalek.  Third year head coach Mike Fox announced the selections, which were the result of a team vote, following practice Wednesday.

Although a defenseman, Heitman was Navy's fourth leading scorer last season with 12 goals and 21 assists in 40 games.  The three Mids who finished ahead of him on the stat sheet a year ago all graduated this past May.  Brewer and Ochalek are also defensemen who are relied upon more for keeping Navy's opponents off the scoreboard than for putting the puck in the net themselves, while Kinkade is an excellent defensive forward.

"We're looking for great senior leadership from these four guys," coach Fox said in making the announcement.  "All four have been with us for their previous three years here, so they know what is expected of them as leaders both on and off the ice.  We're fortunate to have eight returning seniors on this year's team, along with a strong group of returning juniors and sophomores, and an impressive group of incoming freshmen.  Sunday's blue-gold game will give me and the rest of the coaches a good idea of who will be in the lineup when we play our first true game next Friday night."

The Mids will officially launch the new season next Friday, Sept. 18 when they host Lehigh at 7:30 p.m. at the McMullen Hockey Arena.  Navy will host Lehigh again the following night (Saturday, Sept. 19), also at 7:30 p.m.
