“We really like the athletes’ village and it is almost a self-contained city with cafes, sports and fitness center, internet café, all the things we need during the Universiade.  I was also amazed with the hospitality of the volunteers,” said Craig Jonas, Team USA spokesman.

For the hockey teams, the practice rink is in the basement and the game rink is above it.  The game rink has seats for a few thousand people.  Team USA skated for about an hour, and then went upstairs to watch the first period of the Canada vs. China match.

The boys got a special treat when it was decided that they would have McDonalds for dinner at 5:30.  They were excited to have a little taste of home since the food they have been eating is not exactly home cooking.  After dinner, they drove to the Harbin Ice Festival, which is an event that is held every year.  It showcases enormous ice sculptures that are composed of only ice and lights.  They team was amazed and happy to see something other than the village and the hockey rink.

They team will have Pizza Hut tonight after their 2 PM practice!!  They will also meet with the entire United States delegation.

Team USA plays Slovakia tomorrow.  The Slovakian team has been videotaping USA practices.  Team Slovakia has beat Japan (4 -1) and Korea (4 – 2).  This is a very important game for Team USA.

The 24th World Winter University Games run from February 18-28 in Harbin, China and feature 81 events in 12 sports.  The games include 2,500 athletes and officials from 45 countries.  Team USA consists of 53 student-athletes and 27 officials.

“All of the athletes are from different colleges and universities, majoring in different fields such as science, education and arts.  We will be vying for medals, but the most important thing is for the students here is seeing and experiencing the whole city,” said Jonas.

Everywhere in this “Ice City” of 10 million there is a feeling that the next couple days will be a test for bigger things to come.  Harbin failed in a bid to host the 2010 Olympics but is laying the foundation for a possible 2018 Winter Olympic bid.
