Navy Loses Game to Delaware

NEWARK, DE (Thursday, February 12, 2009) – The Navy Hockey Team put up a valiant effort against #3 Delaware but fell to the Blue Hens 8 to 6 in a rare Thursday night contest on the road.

Navy’s Jon Wheeler started the scoring in the first period when his blast went off the post and behind Delaware’s net minder #30 Corey Watkinson.  However, Delaware would score the next three goals on an even strength goal, a short handed goal, and a penalty shot.  With the Blue Hens leading three to one, Navy’s Matt Swezey broke into the zone and roofed a shot past the Delaware goaltender.  However, Navy was unable to take a one goal deficit into the locker room, as Delaware's #27 Jason Michaud scored with only 16.3 seconds left in the first period to restore a two goal lead.

In the second period, Navy’s Alex Wallis banked a shot off the goaltender from the side of the net and  three and a half minutes later, Navy’s Matt Swezey skated past two Blue Hen defensemen and tied the game at four with a shot over the goalie’s shoulder for a power play goal,  This goal chased Delaware’s goaltender Watkinson from the game and he was relieved by #39 Kurt Pflumm.  Delaware’s #12 Kevin Miller tipped a shot past Navy’s Jeremey Estevez late in the second period and the Blue Hens took a one goal lead into the second intermission.

Down by one at 4:35 of the third period, Navy was whistled for two unsportsmanlike penalties and a hooking penalty giving the Blue Hens a five on three advantage for a full two minutes.  Navy killed off the power play for a little over a minute before Delaware scored and built a two goal cushion.  With 4:39 remaining in the game, Navy was again called for two unsportsmanlike penalties and Delaware scored twice to take an 8-4 lead.

Down by four with less than three minutes remaining in the game, Navy stood tall and battled back.  In the final seconds of the game, senior Charlie Daniel scored.  That goal was followed by freshman defenseman Patrick McAleer's first goal of his Naval Academy career on a blast from the blue line.

For the game Delaware scored every possible way - even strength, power play, short handed, and penalty shot.

Navy’s Jeremey Estevez recorded 39 saves, as Navy was outshot 47 to 34.

Navy will host the 32nd Annual Crab Pot Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Navy will play the University of Maryland on Saturday at 7:30 PM.
