Navy Loses Second Game to URI

2009-02-07

ANNAPOLIS, MD (Saturday, February 7, 2009) – On a night to honor Navy’s #4 Matt Swezey, he did not disappoint his many fans as he netted two goals; however, the #7 University of Rhode Island Rams (19-8-2 and 10-3-1 in ESCHL) still defeated Navy (13-18-4 and 2-10-1 in ESCHL) 5 to 2.

Rhode Island scored three goals within a four minute stretch of the first period to take a three to nothing lead into the locker room at the end of the first. However, Navy’s Matt Swezey would not allow the Rams to have an easy night like the previous night. He scored from a sharp angle just 16 seconds into the second period. About 17 minutes later, URI’s Evan Dietz scored on a goal mouth scramble to restore their three goal lead, but Navy’s Matt Swezey would beat the URI’s netminder on his glove side with only 18 seconds left in the second period.

With the Rams holding a two goal lead, the third period featured some incredible college hockey action and two controversial disallowed Navy goals. Unfortunately, the only allowed goal of the period was an empty netter by URI’s EJ Astarita with 15 seconds remaining in the game.

Jameson Marshall recorded 32 saves as Navy outshot URI 40 to 37.

After the game, Navy honored all of the Team USA members including Navy’s #4 Matt Swezey, URI’s #4 Dan Lassik, URI’s #5 Jon Biliouris, URI’s #17 Kyle Krannich, URI’s #20 Devin Sheehan and URI’s Coach Joe Augustine.

Navy Hockey is back in action in Newark, Delaware on Thursday February 12th at 7 PM as they face the #5 University of Delaware Blue Hens. Then, Navy will host the 32nd Annual Crab Pot Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Navy will play the University of Maryland on Saturday at 7:30 PM. NASA Astronaut Stephen Bowen (Captain, USN) ’86 will perform the ceremonial puck drop prior to this game. The Honorable Peter Franchot, Comptroller of Maryland, will perform the ceremonial puck drop prior to the Crab Pot Championship Game.
