Navy Downs Drexel to Start 2009

2009-01-11

ANNAPOLIS , MD (Friday, January 9, 2009) – The Navy Hockey team (11-14-2) started out the 2009 campaign win a terrific 5 to 3 win over the visiting Drexel University Dragons (8-10-0).

The Midshipmen were led by two power play goals by junior defenseman Patrick Heitman and a terrific goaltending display by Jeremey Estevez.

Navy jumped out to a three to nothing lead with three goals in the final minutes of the first period.  The first goal came of the stick of Kevin Frederick as he sniped a top shelf shot.  About two minutes later, Patrick Heitman blasted a shot past Drexel netminder Daniel Pyne, which was then followed by a Matt Keller breakaway goal only 35 seconds later.

With Navy holding a three to nothing lead, Drexel’s Kevin Thren scored during a goal mouth scramble to open up the scoring in the second period.  Navy’s Patrick Heitman responded with his second power play goal of the night about five minutes later.  This goal hit the goal post making all goalies’ favorite sound, but then bounced into the net for what would prove to be the game winning goal.

Drexel netted two goals within two minutes of Heitman’s goal to draw the score to within one but Navy’s Sam Carlson netted an insurance goal in the waning seconds of the second period.

The third period featured back and forth action but no goals.

Navy’s Jeremey Estevez finished with 35 saves as Navy out shot Drexel 48 to 38.

The Navy Hockey (11-14-2) team is back in action tomorrow as they take on Drexel in Philadelphia at The UPENN Class of ‘23 Ice Rink.  There will be no Navy broadcast of the game on Saturday but the Navy faithful can listen to the Drexel broadcast of the game.  Tune in at 7:50 for the pre-game show and face-off is scheduled for 8 PM.
